Squash Blossom Pizza

I have always liked Scala’s Bistro in San Francisco, even when we had the server incident. I know they’ve been through many hands at this point, and they’re just sort of coasting on their old standards. But the breads are excellent and the pizzettas have a lovely thin, chewy crust. I had a delicious squash blossom pizzetta. It was slathered with creme fraiche.

The only thing is, they have NEVER been able to make a decent cocktail. They had an Aviation on the menu but were kind of cryptic on ingredients. The Aviations I’ve had elsewhere have had gin, lemon juice, and maraschino liqueur, which is not the artificially red stuff that the artificially red artificial cherries are floating in. Maraschino liqueur is clear.

This drink… had a heavy float of something red and sweet at the bottom and at the bottom of that… a big, red, waxy maraschino cherry. OK, I ate the cherry.

Now I need to go over to brady’s house and have her make me an aviation. and a sandwich.

That is so sad about the Aviation. Like some poor schlub looked it up in a book and saw the word maraschino and got all excited. I have seen some recipes that call for the dash of maraschino (the CLEAR LIQUEUR) and also a dash of creme de violette, which I have yet to try.

An Aviation with muddled mint is a Sensation, one of my favorite drinks. (Gin, Maraschino, lemon juice, muddled mint.)

Maybe a slatherer taste test is in order.

That squash blossom pizza is ingenious. Good, too?
